Afkortingen die te maken hebben met whisky

Whisky is eigenlijk een vak apart, met zijn eigen vaktaal (zie ons whisky123 woordenboek ») en vele afkortingen. Hieronder staan de belangrijkste afkortingen met betrekking tot whisky op een rijtje.

Algemene afkortingen

  • ABV: Alcohol by volume (alcohol volumeprocent)
  • CS: Cask Strength (sterkte van het vat, voor whisky die uit het vat onverdund gebotteld wordt)
  • CF: Chill-Filtered (zie ook NCF)
  • DB: Distillery Bottling (ook OB)
  • FF: First Fill
  • FWP: French Whore Perfume (een geur die bekend is van Bowmore uit de jaren 80. Lavendel)
  • IB: Independent Bottler (onafhankelijke whisky bottelaar)
  • NAS: No Age Statement (whisky waarbij de leeftijd niet genoemd wordt)
  • NCF: Non Chill-Filtered (zie ook CF)
  • OB: Original (of Owner's) Bottling (ook DB)
  • OBE: Old Bottle Effect
  • ppm: Parts per million (van fenolen, manier om Geturfdheid van mout te meten in aantal fenolen, deeltjes per miljoen)
  • PX: Pedro Ximenez sherry
  • QC: Quarter Cask
  • SC: Single Cask
  • SM: Single Malt
  • yo: Years old (leeftijd van een whisky)

Vaten met hun inhoud (gemiddeld)

  • Barrel / ASB: 185 liter (meestal een ex-bourbonvat)
  • Butt: 500 liter (meestal een ex-sherryvat)
  • Pipe: 500 liter (meestal een ex-portvat)
  • Hogshead / "Hoggie": 250 liter
